An apparatus for obtaining a single scan of the nuclear magnetic resonance image data about a plurality of selected planes of an object, inclined at different angles using a wafer indicator (31 of FIG. 7) for transmitting a signal indicative of a particular shot to a random access memory (28 of FIG. 7) holding multiplication and shift parameters and providing the terms of multiplication and shift corresponding to the angle of the plane in question. A generator (20 in FIG. 7) provides a form of generic gradient waveform to an arithmetic unit (25 of FIG. 7) that combines this waveform with the multiplication and offset parameters stored by the memory random access to create waveforms which, when applied to the gradient coils (53, 57 and 60 of Fig. 7) of a nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus, bring into rotation the wafer selector and read gradients, thereby obtaining image data on inclined planes with different angles. The invention also relates to a method performed with this device.
