Clay or clayey masses are treated or processed in such a way that they are suitable for sealing or lining landfills or that they can be used for the encapsulation of harmful substances. An absolutely tight, leaching-free sealing or covering is obtained as a result of capillary water and adhesion water being removed from the clay matured with water or from the clay mass, and the surface of the clay particles thus being activated for the absorption of finely divided harmful substances.
