An electron beam generator for a colour picture tube has a first group of electrodes for generating electron beams and for directing said beams along a trajectory to a luminescent screen (3), and a second group of electrodes which forms a main lens and focuses the electron beams on the luminescent screen, the second group of electrodes consisting of a third, fourth, fifth, and sixth electrode (G3-G6) which, starting from the first group of electrodes are arranged in series in the direction of the luminescent screen. The fourth electrode (G4) consists of a first, a second, and a third element (121, 122', 123) which, starting from the first group of electrodes, are arranged in series in the direction of the luminescent screen. The second element (122') has pinhole diaphragms for transmitting the electron beams, and a constant potential is connected to the second element. The first and the third elements (121, 123) each have pinhole diaphragms for transmitting the electron beams, and the first and the third elements have potentials connected to them which change as a function of a deflection current (sweeping current) which is fed to a deflecting yoke for electron beam scanning.
