In calcium metal mfr. by thermal decomposition or technical calcium carbide under vacuum or an argon sweep, the novelty is that decomposition is carried out in the presence of a carbon solvent under a calcium pressure less than atmos. pressure and at a temp. at least equal to the Fe-C binary alloy eutectic temp. to separate the Ca from the C which is retained in the solvent. The solvent is pref. one or more of Cr, Mn and esp. Fe. ADVANTAGE - The process is industrially applicable since the carbon solvent allows incresae in the pressure for Ca liberation (so that high vacuum is not required) and the process can be carried out (semi-)continuously.
