The drive is intended for the control of a multi-pole, sulphur hexafluoride insulated circuit breaker and contains several piston/cylinder units (1, 2) which can be controlled by a pressure medium. For all pistons (3, 4) is pivoted a common mechanical coupling which prevents any postion change of the units, when the actuating force fails at least at one unit. Preferably a coupling rod (18) is used for connecting the pistons, a switching drive being located between this rod and each piston. On one side the pistons may be continuously under the OFF force of an energy store, while permitting engagement by ON pressure. This pressure may be smaller or equal to the OFF force. One piston side may be engaged by a hydraulic pressure line (6, 7), incorporating a non-return valve (12, 13).
