A track tamping unit of a track tamping machine comprising at least one vibratable and adjustable or closeable tamping tool (4) mounted for rotation on an axis (A) and comprising tamping tools squeezable towards one another and arranged in pairs, more especially for carrying out the tamping operation, and a drive operable by a pressure medium to generate the vibration and squeezing movements, characterized in that the drive (13) formed by a rotary vane feeder (1) rotatably mounted in a housing (2) and comprising at least one vane (1a) is directly mounted on the axis of rotation (A) of the tamping tool (4) and in that either the housing (2) of the drive (13) or the drive shaft (16) of the rotary feeder (1), which leaves the housing (12) and lies in the axis of rotation (A), is connected non-rotatably to the tamping tool (4), the movements of the tamping tools (4) being generated by variation of the volume of pressure medium in the pressure chamber (14, 15) arranged on both sides of the vane (1a) through delivery of a certain volume of pressure medium to the pressure chambers (14 or 15) and simultaneous removal of the same volume from the pressure chambers (15 or 14).
