A textile tube (4) is drawn from the unwinding bale (3) via an expander (5) by means of a supporting band (11) and a pressure band (14) onto a winding bale (7). The lower slit edge (51) rests on the supporting band (11) and is loaded by the inner cheek. The other (52) rests on the top side of the inner cheek. It is deflected between the deflecting rollers (55, 56) by means of a deflection device (54), that is to say covers a greater distance than the lower slit edge. The slit edges offset longitudinally relative to one another are then sewn together. Colour sensors are appropriately used for coloured striped material. The originally spiral course of transverse lines of the tubular material can thus be changed automatically in a simple way after presetting, especially the spiral pitch of the circumferential lines can be changed over.
