In a method for operating a programmable sewing machine, especially an industrial sewing machine, programme parts of a sewing programme being selected and lined up by means of input switches or input keys and sewing-machine functions being called up in a programmed manner within a specific programme part, and in a sewing machine operated according to this method, provision is made for a specific programme type, comprising only highly specific programme parts, to be preselected by means of a preselection arrangement (6) before the individual programme parts (PA1, PA2 and PA3) are lined up and before the various sewing-machine functions are fixed.
