The invention relates to mono-2-[dodecyl-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]ethyl dicarboxylates of the general formula (I) IMAGE and their salts of the general formula (II) IMAGE in which A stands for the radicals IMAGE and M stands for an alkali metal or the ammonium group, and the use of compounds of this type on their own or in combination with one or more complexing agents in concentrations of 10 to 250 g/m3 as corrosion inhibitors in aqueous systems, if appropriate in the presence of further scale inhibitors and/or dispersing agents and/or non-ferrous metal inhibitors and/or microbicides known per se.
