Economical combustion of sulphur-containing hard coal (bituminous coal) and brown coal (lignite) and other fuels even in relatively small quantities is made possible, comparatively simply, by the fuel, while still bonded together underground, being admixed, with a high injection pressure, with the additives for desulphurisation and denitration of the flue gases. Provision is made for high-pressure water to be supplied, both by means of coal face infiltration (soaking) and by long-wall, deep, diagonal or remote infiltration (soaking) or by a combination thereof, the water being enriched with an appropriate amount of additives. The homogeneous distribution resulting therefrom, e.g., limewash suspension whose stoichiometric concentration depends on, e.g., the sulphur content of the coal, makes it possible to achieve and maintain a high degree of desulphurisation.
