A closed, oil-filled metal housing, with laterally opposing hydraulic cylinders, provided with cooling fins, forms the brake unit, which is fixed to the chassis of the vehicle independently of transmission and clutch and of the brake devices present on the vehicle. A splined shaft, which as lay shaft or auxiliary shaft is solidly connected to the propshaft, runs through this housing, on which splined shaft, eccentric units composed of needle bearings and red brass rings and slipped on in close succession, free of imbalance, are progressively jammed, driven by means of a hydraulic unit between the rams of hydraulic pistons working in opposition to one another. In order nevertheless to prevent jerky stopping of the vehicle, highly resistant coil springs are situated between rams and pistons. Oil is uniformly fed in and returned by way of a double pressure maintaining valve with a common expansion valve. As an alternative to the eccentric units, multi-curved or elliptical rotors can be used, in accordance with the main application of 25/27 July 1987.
