Most ground strokes in tennis can be learnt only in the presence of a tennis trainer. This also applies to the use of a serving machine, where the trainer corrects individual strokes. In a method and apparatus for practising tennis serves, the person in training can proceed on a self-taught basis, since no ball is released for the serve unless the movement sequence is correct, i.e. breaking of the light barriers. This movement sequence is subsequently better coordinated and controlled or optimised by the player, even without a machine.
