The present invention relates to a diaphragm pump and a plastic diaphragm. The diaphragm pump consists of at least one housing or housing part (1), at least one head part (2), a diaphragm (3) fastened to the housing and/or head part and preferably clamped or arranged between the housing part and the head part, inlet and/or discharge valves (4, 4'), a plunger or connecting rod (5) which is preferably connected to the central region of the diaphragm, and also, if necessary, pump or compressor parts, additional parts, auxiliary or connecting devices for pumps or compressors, which are known per se. The diaphragm and the plunger or connecting rod consist of the same plastic or contain the latter, the diaphragm being joined to the plunger head by injection moulding or welding. The head part and the diaphragm are constructed such that the diaphragm is arranged, at the upper dead centre of the plunger or connecting rod, at a distance from the inner face of the head part or touches the inner face of the head part only in a very small edge region, without bearing against the head part.
