A large number of coagulation parameters can be analysed by means of the optical properties of the clot. Thus, specifically, fibrin formation is associated with a diffuse turbidity of the plasma and, accordingly, a decrease in the transmission of light. The subsequent blood clot retraction is associated with an increased shortening of the primary clot, with a clear serum phase being squeezed out, while the clot becomes increasingly compacted. A measuring device with a plurality of light barriers which are arranged at identical intervals above one another or one which is movable vertically makes it possible, via simultaneous recording of the transmission of light and the position of the light barrier, to carry out combined determination of the fibrin formation time and the kinetics of blood clot retraction.
