The invention relates to a composition that can be used for the manufacture of a ceramic material, consisting essentially of an intimate mixture of powders, which comprises, per 100 parts by weight: aluminum nitride in a proportion of 85 to 99, 5 parts by weight; and at least one sintering additive chosen from rare earth and alkaline-earth metal oxides and substances providing such oxides by thermal decomposition, this (or these) additive (s) being present at a rate of 0, 5 to 15 parts by weight of equivalents of oxides, said mixture further comprising, per 100 parts by weight, an amount of silicon carbide of less than 5 parts by weight. The resulting ceramic material can be used in the electronics industry, for encapsulation of integrated circuits and as support substrates for integrated circuits, as well as, in the mechanical field, as a material for calorie evacuation. / P
