The invention relates to an improved drilling fluid. Said fluid comprises: (1) a liquid phase containing: (a) an aqueous phase comprising fresh water, distilled water, sea, brine, artificial brine or mixtures thereof; and (b) a water-soluble component selected from alcohols and copolymers; (2) a viscosity modifier for suspending solids in the liquid phase; and (3) a filtration regulator. / P P Application: Use of said non-polluting drilling fluid in a subterranean well for inhibition of shale swelling. / P
