The apparatus employing the method comprises a pipe 1 which is inclined with respect to the horizontal, on the lower face of which is fixed, in a leak tight manner, a prism 2. A nozzle 3 controlled by a solenoid valve 4 washes the prism before and after the flow of the said solution in front of the prism. A computation and control means 7 connected to a monitor 17 determines during the flow of the said solution its refractive index and calculates the concentration of the said material several times, and deduces the average concentration to be displayed on the screen of the monitor 17.
