Polyurethane seat partly bonded to fabric cover during moulding - to combine retention of position with ease of local repair

A combination of a seat cushion of expanded polyurethane and a fabric cover is produced under moulding conditions such that only part of the cover is anchored to the moulded resin. The anchored zone comprises some or all of the surface (c) to be in direct contact with the user, but little or none of the other zones, i.e. along the sides of the cusion. Adherence between cover and core may be promoted by applying an adhesive on the cover zones to be bonded and/or prevented by locating temporary impermeable panels of flexible film over the zone of the cover to remain free. Anchored zones may flank free portions of fabric over channels or crease zones which increasee the flexibility of the cushion. A circular free zone pref. surrounds any buttons, to allow for natural puckering of the adjacent fabric. Opt. an intermediate panel of padding is located between the cover and the core; the padding may be bonded to parts of the cover and/or the core, particularly where the user will be in contact with the cover. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for mfr. of shaped car seats or squabs. Secures the alignment of the cover and cushion against disturbance in use, but the free portions of the cover are more readily repaired or replaced if subject to local damage.
