PURPOSE:To accurately control generating gas temp. in a smelting reduction furnace by arranging water cooling pipe at upper part inside of the smelting reduction furnace and adjusting water flowing rate in the water cooling pipe. CONSTITUTION:At the upper part in the inside of the smelting reduction furnace 2, for example at carbonaceous material fluidized bed part 5, the water cooling pipe 6 is arranged. Variation of the generating gas temp. in the furnace is detected with a thermometer 9 and the cooling water rate supplying into the water cooling pipe 6 is adjusted in accordance with the variation, to lower the generating gas temp. at the max. of about 200 deg.C. By this method, the gas temp. can be controlled to the aimed temp. without changing reduction gas components and the smelting reduction operation can be stabilized.
