PURPOSE: To improve the reliability of automatic detecting of various lung aberrations by normalizing two tissue measures using a database of normal lungs and determining a single tissue index by two normalized tissue measures considering the distribution of tissue measures obtained by an abnormal lung. CONSTITUTION: Digital image data corresponding to a specific breast X-ray photograph are inputted 100 and stored 105 in a memory. Next, a proper ROI (region of interest) is selected 110, tissue measures R, M are calculated 120 and normalized 130 based on the statistic value of a normal lung database. Next, the normalized tissue measures are applied to a computer 140 and the tissue index of each ROI is compared with an interactively selectable threshold value by a controller 1501 by applying a single tissue index to a comparator 150. The controller 1501 applies the threshold to store ROC data 152 in a memory and generates false positive data and true positive data based on the threshold value. When any of comparators 1601-3 determined positive, abnormal lung classification 170 is carried out, and, determined negative, normal lung classification 180.
