PURPOSE:To improve the resistance of a cylinder liner to wear and corrosion by sulfuric acid and to reduce the wear losses of the liner and a piston top ring used in combination by forming a nitride layer on the sliding surface of a liner material obtd. by adding specified amts. of P, Cr and Si to cast iron and further inoculating the cast iron with Ca-Cu. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder liner for an internal-combustion engine is made of a material obtd. by adding 0.3-0.6% P, 0.6-0.9% Cr and 1.3-1.8% Si to cast iron contg. 2.8-3.6% C and by further inoculating the cast iron with Ca-Cu or adding Cu. A nitride layer of =3mum thickness is formed on the sliding surface of the liner material. The cylinder liner is used in combination with a piston ring made of surface-nitrided martensitic stainless steel as a top ring. The wear losses of both the liner and the ring can be reduced.
