Subgingival plaque samples can be analyzed for the presence of the trypsin substrate N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-naphthylamide (BANA) in order to make a clinical diagnosis of periodontal disease. The solid phase test utilizes enzyme sensitive reagents adsorbed separately onto two elements. The sample is added to one element, the second element contacted therewith and water is added to initiate the reaction. The resulting analysis is complete within thirty minutes. Positive tests indicating periodontal disease-causing organisms are determined by a color change on the element containing the Fast Black K salt color developer. The test provides a stable, readable, permanent record which can be included in the patient's dental records.
