PURPOSE:To obtain a deodorant excellent in fast-acting and lasting properties by incorporating a specific amount of ethanol-polyhydric alcohol in water soluble aliphatic oxycarboxylic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof and a specific unsaturated dibasic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof. CONSTITUTION:Polyhydric alcohol is used in an amount of 15-200 pts.wt. in the case of glycerine, 20-180 pts.wt. in the case of ethylene glycol and 18-190 pts.wt. in the case of propylene glycol with respect to 100 pts.wt. of a composition consisting of 60-93 pts.wt. of water-soluble aliphatic oxycarboxylic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof and 7-40 pts.wt. of unsaturated dibasic acid copolymerizable with a vinyl monomer or a water-soluble salt thereof and this polyhydric alcohol and ethanol are contained in said composition. In this case, ethanol is contained in such an amount that the numerical value of formula I is at most 1.1, in the formula weight is the same unit, and calculated on the assumption that the specific gravity of ethanol is 0.795, that of glycerine is 1.261, that of ethylene glycol is 1.113 and that of propylene glycol is 1.038. This deodorant composition is used in a state adsorbed by a highly adsorbable inorg. substance such as activated carbon, zeolite or new ceramic, paper, a paper vessel, a fiber, a nonwoven fabric, wood or the like.
