PURPOSE:To obtain the active matrix liquid crystal display element having high quality at a high yield by subjecting an active substrate to a rubbing treatment in at least two directions. CONSTITUTION:The active matrix is subjected to the orientation treatments in at least two directions; the 1st orientation treatment and the 2nd orientation treatment which are different in directions from each other. The counter substrate is subjected to the orientation treatment in at least one direction. Namely, the substrate is first rubbed toward the orientation direction 22 by the 1st orientation treatment and in succession, the substrate is rubbed toward the orientation direction 23 by the 2nd orientation treatment which determines a preferential visual field. The active matrix liquid crystal display element having the high quality without having orientation defects is produced at the high yield in this way.
