CHLORINATION OF BENZENE OR MONO-SUBSTITUTED BENZENE

PURPOSE:To suppress a by product by introducing a chlorine gas into a gas- liquid separating tank in the upper part of a reactor and charging part of hydrogen chloride gas produced as a by-product into the lower part of raising tube of the reactor when benzene or mono-substituted benzene is chlorinated with the chlorine gas in the presence of a zeolite catalyst. CONSTITUTION:When benzene or mono-substituted benzene is chlorinated in a liquid phase by a chlorine gas in the presence of a zeolite catalyst, apparatus consisting of a liquid outside circulating gas lift type reactor having a raising tube 1, gas-liquid separation tank 2 and descending tube 3 and providing cooling means 4 to the raising tube 1 and/or descending tube 3 and solid-liquid separator (preferably filter 5) is used. A raw material benzene is fed to either one position of the apparatus and chlorine gas is fed to a gas-liquid separating tank 2 and part of hydrogen gas which is produced as a by-product is introduced from the tank 2 into the lower part of a reactor, e.g., lower part of the raising tube 1 and reaction liquid is charged into a solid-liquid separator 5, where the catalyst is separated and then purified and the catalyst is returned to the reactor and chlorination is continuously carried out.
