PURPOSE:To measure a span length with high accuracy by mounting antennas in the positions where half the distance between the insulator supporting points of the wire tightening plates on both sides of steel tower arms as base points and analyzing the phase differences of the signals transmitted from artificial satellites. CONSTITUTION:The respective base points X and Y of the span S to be measured of the steel towers 1, 1' are provided on both sides of the steel tower arms and are determined in the positions of half the distance (l) between the insulator supporting points of the wire tightening plates 2a, 2b which support insulators. The signal receiving antennas 3, 3' are installed at these base points to receive time signal radio waves 11 from the artificial satellites. Many pieces of the artificial satellites already turn around the earth and the signals of the artificial satellites are receivable in most areas on the earth. The atomic timepieces are mounted in the artificial satellites and the exact time signal radio waves of about 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz frequency are transmitted. The time signal radio waves are received and the phase differences of the received radio waves are generated from the difference in the arrival time of the radio waves at the different two points. Such differences are inputted to, for example, a floppy disk. The phase differences are processed by personal computers 6, 6' and the span length S is determined.
