PURPOSE:To enable the rapid and exact execution of measurement, by projecting a signal from a distance meter supported swingably at least in the directions of two axes intersecting each other perpendicularly, to just the above of a percussion hole formed by a drop of a weight, and by determining a distance to the plane of the settled ground. CONSTITUTION:A light-wave distance meter 12 supported by a frame 10 is set so that the support point thereof is positioned just above the center of a percussion hole. When X-axis and Y-axis drive devices 26 and 20 are driven, the distance meter 12 supported by a Y-axis 22 is moved in a swinging manner along an X-axis 24 and the Y-axis 22. When a Z-axis drive device 36 is driven, it is rotated around a Z-axis 30. Thereby the distance meter 12 is subjected to fine adjustment for coordinates alignment. Then, with the meter made to swing by prescribed angles, a laser light is projected to measure distance to a plane of the ground, and based on a value thus obtained, the depth of settlement at each point can be computed. When the distance of a point P deviated at an angle theta in the direction of the X-axis 24 from the center of the percussion hole is denoted by l, the depth (h) of settlement of the point P is determined by (lcostheta-L). A distance L is a length from the support point to a reference plane and it is measured beforehand.
