PURPOSE:To make it possible to ignite a solid fuel positively and rapidly by attaching arc generating means to the inside of a combustion chamber of a burner, and operating the means from the external side of the combustion chamber to generate arc of a high temperature and to ignite the solid fuel in the combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:An igniter 12 is constituted in such a manner that a carbon rod 16 panetrates through a part close to the peripheral edge of a receiving plate 2 and is installed upright, a metal plate 17 swinging in a connectable and separable manner is provided, and a DC current is applied between the carbon rod 16 and the metal plate 17. An operating part 17' swinging the metal plate 17 is positioned at the external part of the combustion chamber 4 and the metal plate 17 is swung manually or by a prime mover to generate an arc between the carbon rod 16 and the metal plate 17. The igniting operation is simple and convenient and further there is no possibility of putting out in half burning and the solid fuel can be positively ignited.
