PURPOSE:To obtain a synthetic lubricating oil, consisting essentially of a specific naphthoic acid ester, having high oxidation stability and useful as a gasoline engine oil, land Diesel engine oil, etc. CONSTITUTION:A synthetic lubricating oil consisting essentially of naphthoic acid esters expressed by formula I [X is 1-20C alkyl or formula II (R is 2-20C alkylene)]. The compound expressed by formula I is normally obtained by esterification reaction of naphthoic acid with an alcohol. A novel compound expressed by formula III in compounds expressed by formula I is normally obtained by reacting 2-(1,3,3-trimethylbutyl)-5,7,7-trimethyloctanol with alpha- naphthoic acid in the presence of H2SO4, etc.
