MAXIMAL SQUARE DETERMINING METHOD IN PICTURE ENCODING

PURPOSE:To efficiently determine a maximal square by setting a specific condition to determine the maximal square, and determining the maximal square based on the condition. CONSTITUTION:In a method in which the maximal square is determined while binary picture data are being inputted at every row, when black picture elements exist not on a current scanning line (i) but on previous scanning lines i-1, i-2, i-3 and i-4, the maximal square is determined by an integrated value in the vertical scanning direction of the black picture elements, and when the accumulated black picture elements form a peak, and the height value (h) of a highest part is larger than a width value (d), the maximal square is determined at the highest part. Thus the maximal square can be determined.
