PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for program search newly after search release, by starting the recording from the head of recording just before, when a search release instruction is given. CONSTITUTION:An operation section 1 applies an operation instruction to an input/output interface circuit 2. A reproducing signal is obtained from a reproducing head according to a signal recorded on a tape at CUE or REVIEW operation and applied to an inter-recording detection circuit 5. The circuit 5 supplies an inter-recording signal to the circuit 2 when non-recording part of the tape is consecutive for a prescribed time. On the other hand, a CPU6 fast-feeds the tape with a signal obtained from the circuit 2 and makes play operation for a prescribed time every time the recording head is detected, this is repeated until the search release instruction is received, and the head is returned to the recording head just before, when the release instruction is received for playing operation. Thus, the program search operation newly after the release of search can be avoided.
