PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure the distillation characteristics of an unknown specimen by sensing the time until the distillation liquid of a petroleum product increases by a specified volume and adjusting the specimen heating by comparing it with a set value. CONSTITUTION:The distillation section 1 according to the specification of ASTM and also a sensing section 2 to sense the volume of distillation and a control section 3 to adjust heating of specimens according to the sensing signal both based on ASTM are provided for the automatic distillation testing device. A specimen is thrown into a flask 5 and the inside pressure of the distillation section is reduced to a specified pressure and a heater 4 is turned on to start distillation. As the distillation advances, the distillation liquid accumulates in a receiving vessel 8. When the level of the accumulated liquid reaches the height of a liquid level sensor 22, bright-and-dark signal is developed from the sensor 22 and it is sent to a microcomputer 36, and the sensor 22 is raised to develop dark-and-bright signal and stops. The time 34 taken from the bright-and-dark signal to the dark-and-bright signal of the sensor 22 is measured and compared with a set value. According to the results of the comparison the electric power to the heater 4 is controlled and the heating of specimens is adjusted.
