Process for addn. of a cpd. having an active C-atom to a 2-hydrocarbyl-substd.-1,3-butadiene, by reaction of the two cpds. in water or aqueous-1-3C aliphatic alcoholic mixt. (contg. at most 50% of alcohol), in the presence of a catalyst, comprising at least one water-soluble phosphine and at least one rhodium cpd.; (the catalyst being in soln. in the water or aqueous-alcohol), to give a totally selective addn. of cpds. having an activated tertiary C-atom to the 4-position of the 2-substd.-1,3-butadiene. The addn. products are intermediates for vitamins and perfumes. Known addns. using Pd, Pt, Ni or Co catalysts give mixts. of products, with the cpd. added to the 1,2,3 or 4 position of the butadiene; these mixts. are difficult to separate and the process is industrially uneconomic.
