NEW MATERIAL:Triterpenoidalsaponin consisting of 3-O-{alpha-L-lamnopyra- nosyl-(1 2)-beta-D-galactopyranosyl (1 4)-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl}-soyasa- pogenol B expressed by the formula (R4 is CH2OH). Furthermore, the aimed compound has the following properties: Appearance, white, odorless and crystalline powder having no taste or slightly bitter taste; solubility, soluble in methanol, ethanol and dilute methanol and slightly soluble in chloroform, ether, hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and carbon tetrachloride; melting point, =300 deg.C; specific rota tion, -5.1 deg. (in pyridine); mass spectrum(FAB-MS), m/Z 943(M+ +1). USE:A preventive agent for renal lithiasis. PREPARATION:Whole grass of Desmodium styracifolium is separated and purified from an alcohol extract liquid using a lower alcohol such as methanol or ethanol or water-containing lower alcohol as an extraction solvent.
