The invention relates to a method and a device for preventing liquid material such as water in a volume of liquid like a pipe system from freezing up. The device is suitable for retrofitting in the pipeline exposed to freezing, so that there is no need to dismantle pipework, making it ideal for pipelines that are in use and pipes which would otherwise be inaccessible. According to the method the liquid material 5 in the volume of liquid 3 containing zones exposed to freezing is set in motion by means of one or more mobile elements 6, 7 in direct contact with the liquid, at least one of which is moved by means of a drive device 8.
