The traction apparatus has a bracket plate support with holes and spokes plus traction units fitted with traction pins and threaded traction rods secured proximally to the support plate. The support bracket (1) locating spokes (10) should run in parallel in a plane normal to the plate (3). Each traction unit (2) adjusts along its traction rod (15) which itself can move in the pin holder (18), and are pref. bent so as to cross each other at their ends. The spokes are led transversely through the carpal bones so the stops (11) bear against these from opposite sides, and the support bracket is then fitted in place. The traction pins are passed through the metacarpal bones so as to cross over within the bone without breaking the palm skin. After locating the pins in their holders these are threaded onto the rods as lined up with the bone axes. After appropriate osteotomy the rods are replaced and traction commenced.
