An afterloading device for the treatment of tumours is shielded and is used to transport ribbons containing radioactive material, where ribbons are drawn along non-magnetic tubes (9) characterised in that a moveable magnet (12) is arranged around each tube. Connected to each ribbon is a metal pin (32) containing magnetic material. The magnet transports the ribbon connected to a leader (49) by magnetic attraction along the tube (channel) out through the open end (9). At this point a portable coupler grips the pins and thus the leader (40) with a force greater than the attraction between the magnet and pin (32). This allows the coupler to be detached (or reattached), separating (or re-joining) the patient and machine.
