The present invention describes the methods to be used in diagnosing individuals genetically at risk for cancer. With the methods of the present invention, fibroblasts are removed from the individuals to be tested, cultured in an appropriate culture medium under appropriate culture conditions and assayed for spontaneous development of abnormal morphology, chromosomal abnormality, anchorage independent growth, or escape from senescence. If one or more of the above-listed characteristics are observed, the individual may be diagnosed as having a genetic predisposition for developing cancer.
