In a reciprocating piston internal-combustion engine with overhead camshafts in a 5-valve cylinder head, two inlet valves (4, 4') are arranged adjacent, at an acute angle ( alpha ), in one half of the combustion chamber, with their axes (7, 7') in a common plane (Ev) of a cylinder centre plane (EZM), while a third inlet valve (4"), offset transversely to the cylinder wall, opposite the two abovementioned inlet valves, is arranged in such a way that, with its axis (10), it intersects the common plane (Ev) of the two other inlet valves (4, 4') at an acute angle ( beta ) on the cylinder side.
