transverse discharge excitation laser comprising a dielectric structure (11, 13, 111, 113, 211, 213) to define a cavity of elongated laser excitation (27, 127, 230) containing a laser gas and maintaining a discharge excitation gas laser in the ser.the laser further includes opposing conductive electrodes (33, 41, 129, 133, 135, 145) adjacent to the cavity of the laser. the electrodes are sufficiently small to produce a discharge excitation of the laser in a predetermined region of the laser cavity and to provide optimum performance of the mode of operation desired.in particular, the electrodes are placed in adjacent to the opposite walls of the cavity, which has a width (w), at least one of the electrodes having a width less than the width w of the side walls.
