A γ-ray sterilization process for polyvinyl alcohol gel obtained by freezing an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution and thawing or partially dehydrating in vacuo the frozen material (weight reduction of frozen material after dehydration: 3 % or more). The dose of y-ray is selected between 3 and 10 Mrad to thereby reduce the formation of soluble decomposition products and attain a stable sterilizing effect. Thus, this process is effective and optimal as a process for sterilizing a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel molding for medical use.
