The method entails measurement of the fluorescence of a water sample by determining the relation, in particular the ratio, between the immediate fluorescence and the delayed fluorescence of the water sample which contains a toxicity-sensitive bioorganism. The device comprises a combination of a first fluorescence measuring device for measuring the immediate fluorescence and of a second fluorescence measuring device for measuring the delayed fluorescence, and a signal-linkage or -correlation device for linking together or correlating the output signals of the two fluorescence measuring devices to give an output quantity indicating the toxicity of the water sample.
