In this process the nitrogen oxides contained in the gas are oxidised by the oxygen contained in the gas prior to entry of the gas into the first absorption stage at a gas temperature of 300 to 900 DEG C, organic compounds being added to the gas as radical formers. Subsequently the gas is subjected to a two-stage absorption with use of aqueous ammonium salt solutions as the absorption liquid. The salt solutions thus produced are together neutralised and evaporated, the salts thus obtained, after their pelleting or granulation, being a marketable fertiliser.
