Anaesthetic equipment has an anaesthetic vaporizer from which the anaesthetic can be fed to a setting device, from which metered quantities of anaesthetic can be dispensed to an anaesthetic appliance, and which is provided with a coding for the unmistakable allocation of the setting device to the anaesthetic used. This equipment is to be improved in that a corresponding measurement and monitoring appliance is enabled to identify automatically the particular anaesthetic used and the associated setting device, in order thus to prevent incorrect measurements and incorrect settings. To this end, provision is made for the coding to be actively connected to a sensor (A, B, C, 11, 15, 16, 17) provided between the setting device (2) and the anaesthetic appliance (4), which sensor is equipped with a scanning device (A', B', C', 12, 20, 21, 22) for identification of the coding, which scanning device is connected by means of signal transmission lines (8, 81) to a measurement and monitoring unit (9).
