Process for increasing the methane yield in the fermentation of domestic and/or industrial organic wastes, where the process is carried out in at least two separate stages, of which the first is an acidification stage and the second is the methane-production stage, where both stages are carried out as mixed fermentations, with a methane fermentation being carried out even in the acidification stage, and an acid fermentation, preferably acetic acid fermentation, still being carried out in the methane fermentation stage.
