Apparatus and method for rolling out a series of billets

When rolling out a series of billets one billet (2B) at a time is ejected out of a billet furnace (1) towards a conveyor apparatus (6) which conveys the billet (2B) on towards a first mill stand (4) of a rolling mill train. To improve the throughput of billets, a sensor (3) is provided between the first mill stand (4) and the conveyor apparatus (6) close to the latter. The conveyor apparatus (6) initially has a conveying speed matched to the ejection speed of the billet (2B). The billet (2B) is conveyed at this speed until it is detected by the sensor (3), whereupon the conveying speed of the conveyor apparatus (6) is increased in dependence on signals provided by the sensor (3), and then finally is adjusted to a value which corresponds to the conveying speed of the rolls of the first mill stand (4).
