The present invention relates to an improved process for the synthesis of the tetramethyl ester of phosphonosuccinic acid and the tetraethyl ester of phosphonosuccinic acid in high yields and from easily handleable starting materials, in which dimethyl phosphite or diethyl phosphite is reacted with the dimethyl ester of ethenedicarboxylic acid or the diethyl ester of ethenedicarboxylic acid in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:1.25, with the addition of 1-10 mol % of methanolic sodium methoxide solution or ethanolic sodium ethoxide solution, relative to dialkyl phosphite, at temperatures of 30-120 DEG C.
