The core of the cell for determining the attenuated total reflection at fixed or variable wavelength is a transparent biprism of chosen shape whose refractive index is higher than that of the liq. or soln. under examination in the space (A) above it. Suitable materials include hard flint glass, sapphire, diamond, SrTiO3, TiO2, ZrO2 or quartz glass. Light enters the cell from one side and exits from the opposite side after two reflections at sloping interfaces with the liq. (A) and one reflection at a horizontal interface with the empty space (B) below. ADVANTAGE - Can be fitted 1nto standard spectrophotometer, and is suitable for conc. and strongly absorbent liqs. or suspensions of solids. No sample prepn., thinning or filtration is required.
