A course gyro, consisting of a gimbal-mounted rotor (1), contains a pendulum device (12), the signals of which are supplied to a torque generator (21) in order to adjust the horizon of the spin axis (3) of the rotor (1). The pendulum device consists of a circular disc (13) which is attached to the inner frame (2) and exhibits two slots (14, 15) as diaphragm openings. When the spin axis (3) is horizontal, the diaphragm openings are uniformly covered by a disc constructed as pendulum (17) and arranged rotatably on the disc (13). On the outer frame (5), a bow-shaped carrier (18) is located which carries two light barriers (19, 20) arranged in the area of the slots (14, 15). By differentiating the light barriers, a deflection of the spin axis from the horizontal results in a signal which is formed by the deflection of the pendulum (17) and thus the opening of one slot (14) and the complete closing of the opposite slot (15). A damping device in which there is oil (29), for damping the relative movement, located in a small air gap between a part (25, 27) connected to the pendulum and a stationary part (22), is provided for damping the pendulum movement.
