A process and apparatus are described for determining the degree of exhaustion of the activated charcoal packing (12) of an adsorption filter (11) by means of which chlorine is to be removed from drinking water. An indicator (14) composed of textile fabric, which is impregnated with a chlorine- or active oxygen-sensitive dye, is arranged after the adsorption filter (11) in the direction of flow in a transparent indicator housing (13). A comparison body (23) of constant colour can be assigned to the indicator (14). The degree of bleaching of the indicator (14) is an index for the exhaustion of the activated charcoal packing (12).
